Dental Onlays

Most people have heard of fillings and crowns but many aren’t familiar with dental onlays. Onlays are the ideal dental solution when a tooth is far too decayed or damaged to benefit from a dental filling yet not sufficiently damaged or decayed to require a dental crown. If the damage you’re experiencing falls somewhere in the middle then we at All Dental Group may suggest a dental onlay. Similar to dental inlays, dental onlays restore big cavities without the need to use a dental crown.

Our office in Miami Lakes, FL offers patients a wide array of dental solutions to suit different needs. We want to make sure you leave our office with healthier and more beautiful teeth.

The Difference between Onlays and Inlays

When you visit our dental office, our dentist will gently examine your teeth, check for any problems and recommend the appropriate dental solution for you. Both dental onlays and inlays are similar types of dental restoration options yet these two may cover varying proportions of each tooth.

While the objective of a dental inlay is to fill the gap in between rounded edges or cusps found at the center of your tooth’s surface, a dental onlay works pretty much like an inlay except that they cover one or more cusps. The onlays may also cover the tooth’s whole biting surface. Thanks to the onlays’ extensive coverage, they are often referred to as "partial crowns."

Advantages of Onlays

Dental onlays are very durable, in fact, more so than inlays. They are also typically more durable than fillings which means they’ll last longer. Just like any dental restoration solution, however, onlays can weaken the structure of the tooth. Onlays can be made of either composite resin, porcelain or gold.

With proper care, your dental onlay can last up to three decades. By making sure you practice good oral hygiene like brushing, flossing and regular dentist visits, you can make your onlay last for as long as possible.
